Dame Sally Davies confirmed as interim chief medical officer

Professor Dame Sally Davies (pictured) will take up the role of CMO (chief medical officer) for England when Professor Sir Liam Donaldson steps down on May 31, the Department of Health confirmed today (14/05/10).

Dame Sally began taking up CMO duties from the beginning of May and will stay in the post until a substantive appointment is made, following an open competition to be held this summer.

She remains director general of research and development and chief scientific adviser for the DH and NHS. Her own research interests focus on sickle cell disease and she is a member of the Health Innovation Council.
